Campaign launched to provide medical care for elephants

The Ministry of Tourism, together with the Airavata Elephant Foundation, has initiated a campaign titled “Donate 2,000 riels to help one elephant”.

The campaign aims to muster public support for the foundation, currently facing a deficit of funds required for elephant sustenance and medical treatment in Ratanakkiri province.

“The campaign is an initiative of the ministry and the foundation to raise funds to support the foundation, which is short of funds for elephant care,” Top Sopheak, spokesperson for the tourism ministry, told The Post on June 15.

“The foundation lacks the necessary funds to tend to elephants, one of Cambodia’s rare species. Hence, the ministry has kick-started this campaign to secure support for the foundation’s conservation efforts,” Sopheak explained.

According to a June 12 ministry announcement, public participation for the “Donate 2,000 riels to help one elephant” campaign is key to ensuring the protection, conservation, and propagation of elephants. These endeavours significantly contribute to managing natural resources and preserving biodiversity.

The ministry urged government officials, private companies, tour operators, travel agencies, and the public to contribute funds via the ABA account number 001 674 633 or the ACLEDA Bank account number 15255639. Alternatively, donations can be made by scanning the QR code mentioned in the notification.

On May 31, the ministry secretary of state Chea Kosal held discussions with the Airavata Elephant Foundation, led by Khay Chenda. Kosal encouraged the foundation to explore creative funding strategies by including tourism activities.

The ministry intends to promote events related to pre-wedding preparations or photography to entice more local and international tourists. In doing so, the aim is to create elephant-related tourism experiences in Ratanakkiri province.
