Phnom Krala Pors declared a Protected Area

The Ministry of Environment is declaring Krala Pors mountain, a protected area in recognition of its biodiversity. Krala Pors is a natural home to many endangered species as well as untouched forests.

Krala Pors is a dense forest area covering 110,651 hectares located in both Sesan and Siem Pang districts, including the Sekong River.

The Department of Protected Areas on the East Mekong River has visited Krala Pors mountain several times with its chief partner, the Ministry of Environment in preparation for its protected designation.

Phay Bun Chhoeun, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, noted earlier that Say Samal, the Minister of Environment and Svay Sam Eang, Governor of Stung Treng province, decided to cooperate with local authorities to establish the Krala Pors protected area.

Bun Chhoeun said the new designation will broaden the scope of conservation and help to maintain, protect and enhance the ecosystem. Krala Pors needs protection because it is home to a great number of water sources and a wide-ranging biodiversity that includes several animal species and dense forest cover.

Sam Eang also expressed his full support for Krala Pors mountain protected area and said, “If we do not protect this area, we will face challenges from deforestation, hunting, loss of natural resources and loss of tourism potential and also an important water source”.

He reminded that in the past, authorities set up a working group to prevent various environmental crimes in the area.
